Day One will begin with an update on systemic issues impacting Black Girls locally and nationally, followed by an exclusive screening of “PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools,” a documentary film by Monique W. Morris, Ed.D. and Women in the Room Productions. A panel discussion with Dr. Morris will follow the documentary screening.
Day Two will be filled with plenary sessions, panel discussions, and breakout sessions with local and national experts focused on advancing equity for Black Girls.
Featured speakers include: Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, Leading Authority in the area of civil rights, Black feminist legal theory, and race, racism, and the law; Dr. Venus Evans-Winters, Therapist, Author, and Researcher with a focus on educational policy analysis and racial trauma inside and outside of schools; and Dr. Jamilia Blake, Clinical Psychologist, Researcher, and leading voice on the construct of Adultification of Black Girls.
The Reception and Awards Ceremony on September 27 will honor leaders and organizations who have demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of women and girls in the Pittsburgh region:

Monique W. Morris, Ed.D. is an award-winning author and social justice scholar with three decades of experience in the areas of education, civil rights, juvenile and social justice. She is the author of Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (The New Press, 2016). Dr. Morris has written dozens of articles, book chapters, and other publications on social justice issues and lectured widely on research, policies, and practices associated with improving juvenile justice, educational, and socioeconomic conditions for Black girls, women, and their families. Dr. Morris is the Founder and President of the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI), an organization that works to interrupt school-to-confinement pathways for girls, reduce the barriers to employment for formerly incarcerated women, and increase the capacity of organizations working to reduce sexual assault and domestic violence in African American communities.

Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw
Kimberlé Crenshaw, Professor of Law at UCLA and Columbia Law School, is a leading authority in the area of Civil Rights, Black feminist legal theory, and race, racism, and the law. Her work has been foundational in two fields of study that have come to be known by terms that she coined: Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality. She is the founding coordinator of the Critical Race Theory Workshop, and the co-editor of the volume, Critical Race Theory: Key Documents That Shaped the Movement. A specialist on race and gender equality, she has facilitated workshops for human rights activists in Brazil and in India, and for constitutional court judges in South Africa. Her groundbreaking work on “Intersectionality” has traveled globally and was influential in the drafting of the equality clause in the South African Constitution. Professor Crenshaw authored the background paper on Race and Gender Discrimination for the United Nation’s World Conference on Racism, served as the Rapporteur for the conference’s Expert Group on Gender and Race Discrimination, and coordinated NGO efforts to ensure the inclusion of gender in the WCAR Conference Declaration. She is a leading voice in calling for a gender-inclusive approach to racial justice interventions, having spearheaded the Why We Can’t Wait Campaign and co-authored Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Overpoliced and Underprotected, and Say Her Name: Resisting Police Brutality Against Black Women.

Dr. Venus E. Evans-Winters
Dr. Venus E. Evans-Winters is Professor of Education at Illinois State University in the Department of Educational Administration & Foundations and faculty affiliate in Women & Gender Studies, African American Studies, and Ethnic Studies. She is a licensed clinical social worker, licensed school social worker, and psychotherapist in private practice. Her research interests are educational policy analysis, racial trauma inside and outside of schools, and Black girls’ and women’s psychosocial development across the African Diaspora. Dr. Evans-Winters is the author of “Black Feminism in Qualitative Inquiry: A Mosaic for Writing Our Daughter’s Body” and “Teaching Black Girls: Resilience in Urban Schools”. She is co-editor of the books, “Black Feminism in Education: Black Women Speak Up, Back, & Out”, “Celebrating Twenty Years of Black Girlhood: The Lauryn Hill Reader”, and “(Re)Teaching Trayvon: Education for Racial Justice and Human Freedom”. She is also the author of numerous academic journal articles and book chapters. This invitee to President Obama’s special convening on “The State of Research on Girls and Women”, has served girls, young men, and women in the U.S., Ghana, West Africa and South Africa.

Dr. Jamilia Blake
Dr. Jamilia Blake is an Associate Professor in Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University. Dr. Blake’s research examines the developmental trajectory of peer-directed aggression bullying, and victimization in socially marginalized youth and racial/ethnic disparities in school discipline. Dr. Blake has published studies examining the social and psychological consequences of aggression and victimization for African-American girls and students with disabilities and the disparate impact of school discipline for African-American girls. She is author to more than 40 publications. Her work on the inequitable discipline experiences of Black girls has been featured in the New York Times, Huffington Post, on NPR, and CBS. She is the co-PI of a federally funded grant to examine the relation between school discipline and disproportionate minority contact in juvenile justice centers for immigrant youth. Dr. Blake is the co-editor of the American Psychological Association book, Psychological Assessment and Intervention for Ethnic Minority Children, and is the lead researcher for the Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequity report, Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls’ Childhood. In her role as a Senior Scholar at the Center, Dr. Blake is continuing to explore the perception of Black girls’ innocence and stereotype-based experiences.

The Equity Summit will take place at various venues on the University of Pittsburgh campus. Day 1 sessions will held at Alumni Hall (4227 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15260). Day 2 sessions will be held at the University Club (123 University Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15260). The Awards Reception will be held at the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center (100 Lytton Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, 15260).
